Picture this: you're out on the calm backwaters of Bonita Springs at 8 AM, coffee still kicking in, and Captain Fred already has you positioned over his first honey hole. The morning light is dancing off the water, and within minutes, your rod is bent double with a feisty redfish. This isn't some rushed cattle-boat operation – it's just you, one other angler, and four solid hours of quality fishing with one of Southwest Florida's most accommodating guides. Fred knows these waters like his backyard, and he's got the fish-finding skills and easy-going personality that make every trip feel like fishing with an old buddy who just happens to know where all the big ones hide.
Captain Fred runs a tight ship on his stable 20-footer, but the vibe is anything but stuffy. You'll launch from a convenient county boat ramp near Bonita Springs and head into the scenic backwater rivers where the real action happens. This isn't about covering massive amounts of water – it's about fishing smart. Fred uses his trolling motor and GPS positioning to keep you right in the strike zone, whether that's over a grass flat loaded with reds or around structure where snook love to ambush bait. The boat's got plenty of room for two anglers to work without getting tangled up, and Fred's always ready to net your fish, snap photos, or move spots if the action slows down. You might spot manatees, shorebirds, or even a bald eagle while you're working the flats – it's that kind of pristine Florida backcountry experience that keeps people coming back.
Fred comes loaded with top-notch tackle and fresh live bait, so you don't need to worry about bringing anything except sunscreen and a cooler for any keepers. He's dialed in on what these fish want – whether that's live shrimp bounced along the bottom for reds, or perfectly presented pinfish for snook holding tight to mangrove edges. The beauty of fishing with an experienced local guide is that he reads the conditions and adjusts accordingly. If the fish are being finicky, he's got backup spots and different presentations to try. Fred's also great at teaching sight-fishing techniques, especially when targeting cruising redfish on the flats. He'll position the boat, spot the fish, and coach you through the cast and retrieve. For those new to saltwater fishing, don't worry – Fred's patient and always ready to help with everything from baiting hooks to proper fighting techniques.

Redfish are the bread and butter of Bonita Springs backcountry fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored fighters typically run 18-27 inches in these waters, with slot-sized fish being perfect for the dinner table. Reds are year-round residents, but they're especially active during the cooler morning hours when you'll be fishing. They're notorious for that initial bulldogging run when hooked, and watching one cruise across a shallow flat with its back out of the water is pure Florida fishing magic. What makes reds so appealing to anglers is their willingness to eat – they're opportunistic feeders that will hammer live shrimp, cut bait, or artificials when presented properly.
Snook are the glamour species of Southwest Florida, and Bonita Springs has some fantastic populations. These silver-sided beauties with their distinctive black lateral line are ambush predators that love structure – think mangrove shorelines, dock pilings, and creek mouths. They're incredibly line-shy and have razor-sharp gill plates that can cut you off in a heartbeat, which makes landing a quality snook such a satisfying achievement. Snook fishing is best during warmer months, and they're strictly catch-and-release, so it's all about the fight and the photos. A 24-inch snook will give you a battle you won't forget, with acrobatic jumps and powerful runs toward cover.
Tarpon bring the real excitement to these waters, even though most of what you'll encounter are juvenile fish in the 20-40 pound range. Don't let the "juvenile" tag fool you – these silver kings can still put on an aerial show that'll have your heart pounding. Tarpon are most active during the warmer months, and they often travel in small schools through the backcountry. They're notorious for their jumping ability and have mouths like concrete, making hook-ups challenging but incredibly rewarding. The beauty of hooking a tarpon in the skinny water of the backountry is that you get to see every jump, every run, and every head shake in crystal-clear detail.
This half-day morning trip hits the sweet spot for anglers who want quality fishing without burning the whole day on the water. Fred's accommodating nature and fish-finding abilities have earned him a loyal following among both locals and visitors. The 8 AM start time gets you on the water during prime feeding hours, and the intimate two-angler maximum means you're getting personalized attention throughout the trip. Whether you're looking to put dinner on the table with some fresh redfish or hoping to check tarpon off your bucket list, Fred's got the knowledge and patience to make it happen. These Bonita Springs backwaters offer some of Southwest Florida's most consistent fishing, and with the right guide, you're practically guaranteed to have stories worth telling. Don't wait – Fred's calendar fills up quickly, especially during peak season.

Fred took my family out to Hickory Island to fish and explore, then took us into the river for more fishing. He helped my kid land a 24" snook, which was incredibly exciting! Very fun day, great tour guide, really good guy to talk to. Next time we vacation in Florida, we will call Fred again.

My wife and I recently booked a half day trip with Capt. Fred while staying in Bonita Springs at the Hyatt Regency. I communicated with Fred in advance with several questions. He was always prompt and flexible with his desire to provide an optimum day for each of our interests. We met him at a boat ramp county park nearby and his boat was in the water and ready to depart. Our trip down a backwaters river was quite interesting with lots of shorebirds and even a bald eagle sighting. His 20' boat was very stable and spacious for the three of us. He used his geo-positioning ability via his trolling motor to keep us positioned during our first fishing spot. Almost immediately my wife hooked and brought in a legal redfish which we set aside for dinner, and then switched over to catch and release. His fishing gear and fresh live bait were optimum for our targeted species of snook & redfish... which we caught multiples of each. The biggest thing about fishing with Capt. Fred is that he is a very pleasant person, and was always eager to chat or help in any way. I'm posting a few pics, but there were many more vistas and amazing Florida gamefish throughout the day. He also found a local restaurant that would "cook your catch," which was an amazing restaurant (The Fish House)! I can strongly recommend that you consider booking with Capt. Fred!!

Our fishing trip was fantastic! Captain Fred had so much energy! If the fish weren't biting, we would move to the next spot, he never ran out of spots. We caught fish at almost all of them, we would move when the catfish started biting. We highly recommend Fred Gowdy Charters!

Redfish are perfect for anglers of all skill levels and one of our most reliable species around Bonita Springs. These copper-colored fish with distinctive black spots near their tail typically range 20-30 inches and put up a solid, bulldogging fight. You'll find them cruising our shallow grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in 1-4 feet of water - sometimes so shallow their backs show above the surface. They bite year-round but are most active during cooler months. What guests love is their willingness to eat almost anything and their excellent taste on the dinner table. Here's a tip from years of guiding: look for nervous water or slight wakes on calm days. That's often redfish pushing through skinny water, and a well-placed topwater plug will get their attention fast.

Snook are one of our most popular targets around Bonita Springs, and for good reason. These sleek silver fish with that distinctive black lateral line typically run 18-28 inches, though we occasionally hook into 30+ inch bruisers. They love hanging around mangroves, docks, and oyster bars in 2-6 feet of water where they ambush baitfish. Best fishing happens during warmer months when water temps stay above 70°F - they're very temperature sensitive. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and strong runs when hooked. They're also excellent table fare with firm, white meat. Here's a local tip: cast your live shrimp or pinfish right up against the mangrove roots and let it drift naturally with the current. That's where the big ones hide.

Tarpon are the ultimate bucket list fish - these silver giants average 80-120 pounds around here but can reach over 200. What sets them apart is their aerial show when hooked, jumping repeatedly and sometimes clearing 10 feet out of the water. We find them in our deeper channels, around bridges, and rolling on the flats in 8-30 feet of water. Peak season runs May through September when they migrate through Southwest Florida. Most anglers practice catch and release since they're bony and full of mercury. The fight is what brings people back - pure power combined with acrobatics. My local trick: when you see one jump, bow to the fish by dropping your rod tip toward the water. This prevents the line from going tight and breaking when they crash back down.
